Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has flagged off the distribution of 2. 6 million insecticidal nets across the 18 local government areas of the state.

The event, which held on Friday at the Urhokpota Grounds in Benin City, the Edo State capital, was part of measures put in place by the government to rid the state of malaria.

In his address, Governor Obaseki said his administration wants to ensure a 100% coverage of net distribution and utilisation by residents, especially the pregnant women and children under age five.

He also reiterated the desire of the state government to improve on the 2012 statistics of 20% utilisation to a new rating of at least 80%.

“If we succeed in the replacement of the Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) in Edo State, it will translate to rapid scale up of our overall national coverage target,” he said.

The governor informed that the distribution of nets would be from Saturday, August 12 to Wednesday, August 16, at the primary healthcare centres and other designated points across the state.

According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Health delivered at the event by the Director of Public Health, Dr. Evelyn Ngige, Edo State occupies a strategic position in Nigeria.
