At least 17 people have died in post election violence in Nairobi and Kisumu, Kenya Red Cross said on Monday (August 14), adding that this was not an official death toll but a figure based on what staff and volunteers had seen in morgues.

Violence erupted across Kenya in opposition strongholds following elections last week that saw incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta declared a winner in a result disputed by opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Abbas Gullet told reporters that Red Cross staff had attended to more than 100 people with severe injuries including gunshot wounds, head injuries, and fractures.

The Red Cross filmed some of the emergency workers at Kibera and Mathare — two slums in Nairobi that erupted in violence — treating wounds and putting the injured into ambulances.

A Kenyan human rights group said 24 people were shot dead by police in the violence. The police have put the number of dead at six and said those killed were armed criminals who attacked officers who were attempting to arrest them.

Though Odinga says the vote was fraudulent, his National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition has ruled out going to court and says it will announce its strategy on Tuesday (August 15).
