Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has condemned the attack on ‘Resume Or Resign’ protesters in Abuja as undemocratic.

The governor said the attack on the protesters, led by Charles Oputa who is popularly known as Charlie Boy, was not in the best interest of democracy and the rule of law.

The group has been staging a protest in Abuja since Monday, August 7, calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to either resume or resign.

President Buhari, who has been away from the country for more than 100 days, is receiving medical attention in the United Kingdom.

Addressing reporters on Wednesday in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, Fayose described the agitations of the protesters as legitimate and one that must be taken seriously.

He said, “You would recall that during the fuel subsidy protest in January 2012, some interested individuals sponsored a massive protest across the country against the then president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan without being attacked. So, why would the ‘Resume Or Resign’ group led by Charlie Boy be attacked?”

“Nigeria belongs to all of us. The President should either return to the country he left over three months ago or, let him resign from his position”.

The governor noted that the protesters must be allowed to express their displeasure, stressing that it was one of their fundamental rights.

“Don’t we have rights to speak our minds again in this country? Things will be going out of way and they expect everybody to sit and watch, we will resist that,” he said.
