South Korea and the United States are conducting annual military drills despite appeals to halt the exercise.

President Moon Jae-In assured that the joint military exercises kicking off today (Monday) with U.S. Forces do not intend to raise tensions on the Korean peninsula.

The United State describes the drills as defensive in nature, a term the North Korean state media has dismissed as a deceptive mask.

The military exercise involves computer simulations designed to prepare for a possible attack by nuclear-armed Pyongyang and is expected to run through to August 31.
