The Federal Government is set to review cases of inmates awaiting trial for five years and above and those on death row with the view to decongest the nation’s prisons in the next two years.
The Ministry of Justice is also setting up an investigative unit to coordinate all forms of investigation in Nigeria.
The Minister of Justice and Attorney – General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami told journalists in Abuja that as the Chief Legal Officer in Nigeria and in line with section 105 of the 1999 Constitution it has become necessary to set up a central investigative unit for a successful prosecution of such cases.
The minister told journalists that it has become imperative because of the lack of expertise in the conduct and processes of investigation which has led to the consistent rejection of vital and relevant evidences in the prosecution of cases in court.
He also lamented that the Federal Government has incurred a total of 113 billion naira in judgment debt against the Federal Government.
