One person has been killed by suspected herdsmen in Oben community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State.

The herdsmen had allegedly led their cattle in the community’s farmland and an attempt to get them to desist from the act led to the death of one of the community leaders, Efosa Omoregie.

Giving account of the incident, the widow of the late Efosa Omoregie, Gloria, told Channels Television that her husband got into an argument with the herdsmen in their farm and was shot by one of them.

“Not up to one hour the news just came that he has been shot by the Fulani Herdsmen. They should tell the Fulani Herdsmen to leave our land so that when we cultivate we can harvest it. Last year when they came they invaded the whole farm what we cultivated we couldn’t harvest any. My family has been thrown into confusion, we don’t know what to do, we don’t know who to cry to,” she stated.

According to the community members, this is not the first attack and all efforts to arrest the culprits have so far proved futile.

“I am sure last year we went to a meeting in government House with former Governor Adams Oshiomhole in respect of these cattle rearers, they promised to address the issue. On two occasions we held a meeting with the Captain at SEPLAT facility here in respect of the Fulani herdsmen, the other day the Area Commander in Benin Police came to Iguelagba Police Station to hold a meeting with us in respect of the Fulani herdsmen but with all these there is no difference,” a community leader, Idemudia Monday, said.

Another community leader, Kingsley Mowoe explained that the activities of the herdsmen have prevented them from farming and earning a living.

“We are peasant farmers here, despite the fact that we have Oil and Gas here, the company here do not employ our people, we have told the world before now, we depend on the farms and right now the few lands that are remaining for us to farm, Fulani herdsmen have taken over everywhere.”

Members of the community, therefore, appealed to the government to put an end to the activities of herdsmen in their community.
