United States Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Sunday threatened a “massive military response” to any attack on the United States or its allies after North Korea conducted its most powerful nuclear test to date.

Speaking outside the White House, Mattis said, “Any threat to the United States and its territories, including Guam, or our allies, will be met with a massive military response – a response, both effective, and overwhelming.

“Kim Jung-Un should take heed of the United Nations Security Council’s unified voice. All members agreed unanimously on the threat that North Korea poses. And they remain unanimous to their commitment to the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.”

Mattis said a small group national security meeting was held today with President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence about “the latest provocation on the Korean Peninsula”.

“We have many military options and the President wanted to be briefed on each one of them. We made clear that we have the ability to defend ourselves, and our allies South Korea, and Japan from any attack. And our commitment among the allies is ironclad,” he said.

Although Mattis threatened a massive military response to Pyongyang, he said Washington was not looking for the “total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea. But as I said, we have many options to do so.”
