Flood-hit India’s eastern state of Bihar continued to reel under burgeoning Kosi rivers and its tributaries on Monday, as fresh rains raised their levels.

Flooding of the rives have destroyed many villages in the Supaul district, where over 400,000 people are reported to have been affected. Ramesh, head of Marona village, said locals were yet to receive any government help.

“There has been no help from the administration. Right now, not even a polythene bag has been provided; food and water haven’t been arranged. There is a lot of water. Being the village head, I am doing whatever I can for the people,” the village head said.

Heavy rain in Bengaluru city over the weekend halted normal life as people struggled with mud and floodwaters and businesses unable to open due to waterlogging.

“Today we had all hopes to go to work on a Monday morning, and after returning from out of station last night we were not able to go because of this waterlogging,” a resident, Sharon, said.

Flooding happens annually across South Asia, as rivers burst their banks during the June-September season of heavy monsoon rains.

In India’s state of Bihar, where at least 514 people died and 850,000 were displaced, campaigners said the government had built too many embankments, roads and highways that trapped excess water and given little thought to drainage.
