Strike Continues As FG, ASUU Fail To Reach Agreement Again

The reconciliation meeting between the Federal Government and members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has ended with agreements reached on some of their demands.

The meeting which is the third reconciliation meeting between both parties commenced on Thursday and ended in the early hours of Friday morning.

During the meeting, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige offered assurances of government’s commitment to immediately commence the payment of salary shortfalls and funding for universities’ infrastructure.

The Federal Government represented by the Minister reached a fresh agreement with striking lecturers with the assurance to commence the payment of salaries shortfalls as well as the quarterly revitalisation funds for universities immediately.

However, students of Nigerian universities have to stay at more for one week more as the academic staff union of universities has stuck to their guns regarding the strike until the resolutions from the meeting are communicated to its national executive council.

The ASUU President,  Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, said, “Once we are able to resolve the contentious issues, we are willing to go back to our members in earnest and take the final decision on this action.”

At the end of the meeting, the ministers and unionists were preparing their communique which is yet to be released.
