Security forces in Togo have fired tear gas at hundreds of anti-government protesters carrying out a late night sit-out in central Lome, calling for an end to the 50-year-old Gnassingbe family dynasty.

This follows two days of mass protests nationwide involving thousands of people, representing the biggest challenge to Faure Gnassingbe’s rule since he succeeded his late father Gnassingbe Eyadema 12 years ago.

The head of the main ANC opposition party, Jean-Pierre Fabre, earlier pledged to remain seated on the tarmac of the Dekon crossroads until Gnassingbe left power.

Residents say that text messages had also been blocked on Thursday, a measure another minister said was carried out for security reasons.
