Rescuers on Saturday found the body of Juan Jimenez, a police officer buried under the Municipal Palace of Juchitan, the municipality of the southern state of Oaxaca that suffered most from the strong earthquake on Thursday.

The body was found at 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT) by elements of the Navy’s rescue team.

Early on Saturday morning, Jimenez’s sister Margarita Jimenez expressed the “hope” to find him still alive under the ruins. With emotion, she explained that the rescue team asked them not to despair and be patient, because the removal of debris should be done with great care to avoid harming him.

Authorities informed the relatives soon after the body was found. The police officer’s body was later removed from the rubble with a stretcher and covered with a sheet.

He was said to be sitting in a chair, at his place of work, when the roof collapsed.

Up to Saturday night, the earthquake has led to at least 90 deaths. It’s the most devastating earthquake that hit Mexico since 1932.
