Denmark’s Julius Johansen won the men’s junior road race world title in Bergen, Norway on Saturday by pulling out a 51-second lead on the final loop around the city.
Johansen was in the lead group of seven riders who led through the city after 115kms and began the final 19km loop.
The Dane rode away from the others on the final climb, using his time trialling skills, while behind him Norway’s Idar Andersen crashed down the order and Netherland’s Thymen Arensman tried to keep up with him but failed.
Italy’s Luca Rastelli broke away from the chasers to take second place, leaving behind fellow Italians Filippo Zana and Luca Colnaghi.
Johansen drew out his lead from 10 seconds to 51 seconds at the finish and had enough time to sit up and showboat to the crowds before he crossed the line.
Behind him Rastelli just managed to finish in second place but the other chasers were swallowed up by the peloton before the finish.
Italy’s Michele Gazzoli sprinted to take third place and Germany’s Niklas Markl took fourth.
Only Zana from the original chasing group fought back to finish in the top 30 with a creditable seventh place.
