A security Analyst, Mr Oladehinde Ariyo, has said that the recent directive that was given by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris to Commissioners of Police on the need to be responsible to their officers is like the hunter being hunted, wondering the fate of the ordinary Nigerians.

He made this known while appearing on Channels Television’s State of the Nation on Friday.

“It is a case of the hunter becoming the hunted. As a civilian, if I have a problem the next best thing I am supposed to do is to go to the police for cover, security and protection. Now that policemen are the victims, they are now the people being kidnapped, so where do we go as civilians?” he asked.

The security expert further berated the IG for telling the CPs to be responsible for men in the event of an officer under their watch being kidnapped, while stressing it is a clear indication of our failing infrastructure.

Mr Ariyo added, “It is not enough that he is telling the CPs that everyone under his jurisdiction, he got to cover them and that if everyone gets kidnapped, they will go for it. It is not a big deal, which would have been the norm from day one. It is a reflection or strategy of our failing infrastructure.

“Here, we have a record of blowing hot and cold when the issue is very fresh and very hot. For all I care, he is ease-driving; I have no issue with that. The IG is just driving. Is he now just going to tell them no, that everyone under them (the jurisdiction) is under their cover?

“What he is doing is simply to indict the police, that there has been some laxity on their side. Unfortunately, we are highly under-policed. For a country of about 170 million, unless there are 1m policemen, what are we talking about?” he questioned.
