Education Minister Warns Against Poor Delivery Of SDGs Projects

Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Anwukah, has warned relevant authorities in the education sector to ensure that projects meant to drive the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and programmes are timely delivered with high quality.

Professor Anwukah, who gave the warning in a statement on Wednesday, also said sub-standard work and or projects abandonment would not be tolerated.

He was speaking when he declared open a three-day meeting on ‘Implementation status of the Sustainable Development Goal 4’, which focuses on life-long learning opportunities for Nigerians in every part of the country.

The Minister said Debt Relief Gains (DRG) was no longer available for the SDGs projects and programmes except funds from capital allocation, stressing the need to be prudent in expenditure and liabilities for improved budget performances.

He also announced the establishment of a Presidential Council on SDGs which he said presents the opportunity for a seamless coordination, mobilisation, as well as effective oversight of overall implementation of SDGs in Nigeria.

The minister further hinted that the Universal Basic Education (UBEC) has re-introduced the Federal Teachers’ Scheme (FTS) as one of the flagship intervention of the government and a major highlight of the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) endpoint report.

Earlier in a welcome address, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Sonny Echono, urged various actors to play their part in the overall interest of the education sector.

He was, however, hopeful that strict adherence to implementation of the SDG 4 programmes would lead to a major leap in addressing challenges in the sector.

Other speakers at the meeting also pledged their continued support for programmes aimed at achieving SDG 4 in the country.

They include a senior education specialist at the UNESCO office in Nigeria, Dr Saidou Jallow; as well as representatives of the Director General of the National Orientation Agency and Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs among others.
