For traders at the popular Marian Market in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, the New Year has started on a sad note.

A raging fire which started in the early hours of the New Year destroyed many shops in the popular market, leaving many of the traders distraught.

Eyewitnesses blamed the inferno on high voltage and told Channels Television that the fire service was contacted about the fire, but it complained about lacking the tools to help put out the fire.

Full details about the impact of the fire have yet to be ascertained and officials haven’t confirmed the cause.

However, traders who were at the market scrambling to salvage whatever they could and put out the fire, are certain that goods and property worth millions of naira were lost to the tragedy.

While some victims were seen trying to salvage part of their goods before the fire gets to their shops, others were not so lucky to recover anything.
