The Peoples Democratic Party has won all seats in 23 out of the 25 local government areas in Delta State in the just concluded local government elections in the state.

The main opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress won in only ward 02 of Aniocha North Local Government Area.

Supervising the declaration of the results at the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission Office in Asaba, the Chairman of the commission, Mr Mike Ogbodu, said there would be rerun elections in Ughelli North and Ethiope East Local Government Areas due to some of the irregularities recorded in those areas during the exercise.

The election in both local government areas had marred by violence. In Ughelli North, the DSIEC office was set on fire by arms-wielding thugs, while there was widespread violence in Ethiope East

“In accordance with section 46(1) of DSIEC Law, 2017, 59 councillors of the PDP were returned unopposed. PDP clinched 424 councillorship seats, while APC won in only ward 02 of Aniocha North Local Government Area.

“The postponement for Ughelli North and Ethiope East was backed by section 33 (1&2) of the DSIEC Law 2017. The result of the councillorship elections for Otor-Owhe Ward 01 of Isoko North Local Government Area is yet to be declared owing to an order of the High Court of Justice, Delta State, sitting at Ibusa.”

Meanwhile, independent election observers have condemned the violence during the elections, especially the razing of the DSIEC office in Ughelli. They called on all aggrieved persons to take their grievances to the appropriate quarters provided by law.
