The Federal Government has assured Nigerians in all parts of the country that it will not condone further attacks by herdsmen.

Minister of Interior, Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd), gave the assurance on Monday at a meeting with some state governors in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

He told the governors that President Muhammadu Buhari remains committed to ensuring peace in every part of the country.

State governors present include Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Abubakar Bello (Niger), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Darius Ishaku (Taraba), and Mohammad Jibrilla (Adamawa) among others.

Also in attendance were the Inspector-General of Police, Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp, representative of the Department of State Services and Commissioners of Police from the five states who were later joined by the Nasarawa State governor, Tanko Al-Makura.

The Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, who was also at the meeting, expressed worry about the increasing clashes between herdsmen and farmers.

He, however, blamed criminally minded persons for taking the advantage of conflicts between farmers and herdsmen to cause mayhem in the country.

Mr Ogbeh also faulted the past administration for having done nothing to protect the interest of herdsmen.

He further revealed the Federal Government’s plan to establish cattle colonies to be protected by cattle rangers, as well as provide water, pasture and security for such colonies.

Governors Ortom and his Taraba counterpart, Darius Ishaku, however, declared that ranching of livestock remains the best option for Nigeria.

The Governors who addressed the press after a closed door meeting with the Minister of Interior and other security chiefs appealed to Nigerians to remain law-abiding as the government remains committed to the security of all residents.
