The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), the Lieutenant -General Tukur Buratai, has revealed plans by the Nigerian army to reorganise the deployment of troops to the troubled north-east.
Buratai made this disclosure on Tuesday while receiving the House of Representative Committee on Army at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
According to him, the move is necessary to ensure that the troops have reasonable comfort in the course of their operation. The reorganisation will also include the reduction in the number of trenches built.
Although the COAS did not explain the import of the move on the war on terror in the affected region, he said the restructuring would commence as soon as the 2018 budget is passed.
Ahead of the planned reorganisation of the deployment of troops, Lt-General Buratai appealed for more funds for the military.
On his part, the Chairman of the House Committee on Nigerian Army, Rimamande Kwewum, said the National Assembly is aware of the funding challenges the security agencies face and that it would do its best to find ways, as stipulated in the Constitution, to get more funding for the Army.
