The Enugu State Government has expressed concern over what it described as “deliberate absenteeism and lateness” to duty by teachers in public schools in the state.

The Chairman Enugu Science Technical and Vocational Schools Management Board (STVSMB), Mr Obi Kama, during a supervisory tour of technical schools in Udi zone on Friday noted that such acts are an impedement to the learning process of the students, adding that it would no longer be tolerated.

“A situation where principals and teachers report late to work or don’t come at all will no longer be tolerated,” he said.

Speaking further, he noted that coming to school late or failing to teach the students will be viewed as sabotage henceforth, while adding that the era of ghost workers in schools had gone.

He, therefore, warned that any teacher who indulges in such acts would have him or self to blame and advised that those who stay outside their place of posting should relocate to their official workplace to avoid the excuses of late coming or absenteeism.

The team also visited Technical College Umuoka, where the board chairman decried the sorry state of the school engineering workshop.

He, however, promised that the board was already addressing the state of workshops in technical schools and gave the assurance that renovation will commence in earnest.
