The Imo state government has lined up a one-month long activity to commemorate the celebration of the creation of Imo state 42 years ago.

Speaking after an interdenominational service to commemorate the event at the Government house chapel in Owerri the Imo state capital south-east Nigeria, the state Governor Rochas Okorocha says at 42, Imo state has come of age after going through many socio-political and economic challenges in the past.

He said having come this far, the people of the state are proud and happy of what it has become at 42 years. He called on the people of the state to close ranks and continue to live in peace and harmony.

It is an interdenominational service to mark the celebration of Imo state at 42, and gathered at the government house chapel in Owerri the Imo state capital are top government functionaries, royal fathers, the leadership of security operatives in the state, indigenes of the state and well-wishers.

The Choir rendition and musical performance paved way for the sermon of the day tagged Imo at 42: Rejoice which was delivered by the Government house chaplaincy Pastor Bunmi Babs.

Afterwards, fervent prayers were rendered for the state and its people followed by a thanksgiving offering.

Speaking to newsmen after the church service, the Imo state Governor Rochas Okorocha congratulated the people of the state for celebrating at 42, he said the state has come of age and a state to be proud of amongst other states of the federation, thereby urging the people of the state to close ranks irrespective of political differences and unite for a better Imo state that children yet unborn can be proud of. He said the state has set aside a one-month long activity to showcase different activities to celebrate the state at 42.

The Imo state commissioner of Information and strategy Nnamdi Obiaraeri also added that the celebration of the 42 years of the creation of Imo also coincided with the 7 years anniversary of free education in the state by which very significant for students in the state.

Imo state is one of the 36 states in Nigeria and lies in the South Eastern part of the country. Created on the 3rd of February 1976 with Owerri as its capital and largest city.
