Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura has donated relief materials worth millions of naira to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Kadarko and Agyaragu communities in the state.
Speaking during his visit to the communities on Saturday, the governor disclosed that his administration was working closely with the security agencies to ensure the safe return of displaced persons from the Southern region of the state.
He noted that thousands of residents (comprising men, women and children) from villages in the southern part of the state who fled their homes over the fear of being attacked, earlier in the year, have yet to return to their communities.
Governor Al-Makura was worried that others have found solace in schools’ premises for the time being before their resettlement.
He explained that the state government was worried about their condition, leading to his visit to commiserate with them and donated food and non-food items to cushion their plights.
Al-Makura told the displaced persons that : “I’m here on behalf of the government of Nasarawa State and, indeed your brothers and sisters in all the 13 local governments of Nasarawa State, to come and commiserate with you, sympathise with you, and feel the way you are feeling, and to extend the little we can to relieve you of the challenges and the burden of having to stay away from your cherished places of abode.”
One of the displaced persons, Juliana Peter, who spoke to Channels Television in Hausa, commended the governor for his visit and concern for their well-being.
Peter, however, said their worry was to go back to their various homes to prepare for the farming season as the rains are imminent.
“We thank the governor so much, but we want to go back home. We plead with him to give us security so that we can go back; with that, we will thank him even more,” he said.
On his part, the governor noted that he is not oblivious to their concerns, as the government is collaborating with security operatives to ensure their safe return.
