The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man, Owolabi Musiliu, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Fausat Idowu.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Ahmed Iliyasu, who paraded the suspect on Friday, described the death of 40-year-old Fausat as ‘inhuman treatment to man’.

Leading police personnel to where the deceased was buried in a shallow grave, Mr Iliyasu said that Musiliu, a mechanic at the Mechanic Village in the Camp area of Abeokuta, took Fausat to a hotel in the state capital for pleasure before her death.

Briefing reporters after the body of the victim was exhumed by the police in an uncompleted building, the commissioner said: “the deceased’s younger brother, Hammed Idowu, had on February 1, reported to the police that the deceased, said to have gone to attend a naming ceremony at Bode Olude Area, failed to return home.”

“On the strength of the report, detectives at the Homicide Section were detailed to investigate the matter. Through technical and intelligence-based investigation and profiling of the deceased’s telephone call log, it was revealed that the suspect was the last person she spoke with,” he added.

Iliyasu revealed further that the suspect was tracked and apprehended by the police on March 19, after which he confessed to committing the crime during interrogation.

“The suspect admitted taking the deceased to a hotel at Iyana-Apakila, Abeokuta, for pleasure where he claimed she fell ill and later took her in his vehicle, but died under a mysterious circumstance in the car,” the police commissioner said.

He disclosed that the suspect also confessed that he took the remains of the deceased to a bush, dug a shallow grave, and buried her without disclosing same to anybody.

According to Iliyasu, this made the circumstances of her death mysterious as well as questionable, saying such act is condemnable.

He said the suspect would soon be arraigned in a competent court of jurisdiction to face the consequence of the crime he allegedly committed.

On his part, Musiliu told reporters that he had been having an affair with late Fausat for about six months.

He also confessed that it was the first time that he and the deceased – mother of four and a divorcee – would try to have a sexual intercourse since they started dating.

On what transpired at the hotel, the suspect said they were just undressing when Fausat suddenly developed a severe temperature and later slumped.

He added that he discovered that she later died in his vehicle while he was taking the deceased to the hospital.

Asked why he did not inform the police, Musiliu who is a father of three claimed that he became apprehensive and decided to hide her body and later buried her in the midnight.
