Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has described a former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, as a ‘hypocrite’ who is trying to hijack Nigeria’s recovery process.
He made the statement during a conversation with journalists at the International Press Institute (IPI) World Congress gala night held on Friday in Abuja.
“Obasanjo is one of the greatest hypocritical leaders this nation has ever produced,” he said.

Soyinka’s statement was a response to the question from a member of the audience on why Soyinka ‘hates’ Obasanjo and a former military head of state, Sani Abacha.
Soyinka said further that the two-time civilian President is not the right person to lead any movement for reform or change of leadership in the country.
He, therefore, warned against the glorification of a movement by Obasanjo called the Coalition for Nigeria.
“As for Obasanjo, I have news for him. I believe Obasanjo has really crossed the red line because he’s trying to put himself at the helm of a recovery process. He is trying to hijack the recovery process, in this nation, and I say that he is one of the least worthy former head of states to lead that kind of movement.
“This nation forgets very very fast. No sooner does one come out with some kind of criticism and everybody starts hailing him as the Messiah. Very often, the people are their own greatest enemy,” Soyinka said.
