Niger Pipeline Explosion: Communities Seek Compensation For Burnt Farmlands

Niger Pipeline explosion on Sunday (July 8, 2018).

Residents of communities around a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) substation in Niger State that exploded, are seeking compensation for their farmlands that got burnt.

The residents, some of whom spoke to Channels Television, also appealed to concerned authorities to provide parks for tanker drivers to keep their vehicles, to decongest the roadsides and ensure the safety of their lives.

The pipeline exploded on Sunday while some residents were scooping fuel from it in Dagbo-Pogo community of the state.

Although no lives were lost in the incident, several persons were injured by the explosion.

Firefighters were, however, seen battling to put out the blaze that erupted from the vandalised pipeline.

Also, officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the police as well as that of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NISEMA) were at the scene of the incident.

Although journalists were barred from entering the premises of the NNPC substation, Channels Television gathered that the organisation is evacuating tankers to prevent an escalation of the situation.
