Family and friends in Fayemi’s home in Isan Ekiti, celebrate his Victory

 

Residents of Isan Ekiti town of Ekiti State, the hometown of the winner of the state 2018 governorship election, Dr Kayode Fayemi, as well as his friends and family, have continued to jubilate over his victory.

While his supporters were seen dancing and praising God outside his home for the result of the polls, he (Fayemi) was seen inside, celebrating with close friends and family.

The Independent National Electoral Committee (INEC), declared Fayemi as the winner of the election in the early hours of Sunday after securing 197,459 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Olusola Eleka of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 178,121 votes.

Addressing journalists, the governor elect said the victory at the polls was a demonstration that the Institutions are functioning, and Nigeria’s Democracy is working.

He commended INEC and security agencies for their conduct in ensuring that there was no violence.

Furthermore, he urged Nigerians to continue to keep faith and ensure that the nation commits fully to democracy and not autocracy.

He also promised to restore values in the state, return to decorum and civility as well as respect for elders.

The buildup to the election was filled with drama and heightened expectations  leading to fears of violence, with more than 30,000 policemen eventually deployed to provide security.

It, however, started and ended rather smoothly except for cases if card readers malfunctioning in some Polling Units.
