The Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday appointed Mr Nnochirionye Afunanya as its new spokesman.

This was disclosed in a statement from the Public Relations Department of agency’s headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

“The Department of State Services (DSS) announces the appointment of Mr P.N. Afunanya as its Spokesman/Public Relations Officer. He replaces Mr Tony Opuiyo,” the statement read.

Mr Afunanya until his appointment was the Editor-in-Chief of the DSS’ in-house Magazine, The Triple S.

He obtained his first degree in English from the Abia State University, Uturu in 1997, after which he got an MA in English from the University of Uyo in 2009.

The new DSS spokesperson, who also has an MA in Peace and Strategic Studies from the University of Ilorin in 2011, is currently pursuing a PhD in Security and Strategic Studies at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

He attended several courses within and outside the country which include Innovation and Strategy at Harvard University, Boston, USA; Security Management and Coordination, London; and Investigative Journalism at City University, London.

Afunanya also attended courses on Leadership, Arbitration, Conflict Management/Resolution, Negotiation, as well as Public Communication among others.

He is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (NiCarb), Nigerian Red Cross (NRC), Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), and Nigerian Institute for Industrial Security (NIIS).

Others associations the DSS spokesman belongs to are the Society for Peace Scholars and Practice (SPSP), American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), and a fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration (ICA).
