Imo SIEC Set To Conduct First LG Polls In Seven Years

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) says it is ready to conduct the first local government elections in seven years.

ISIEC Chairman, Mr Ethelbert Ebebuchi, said this on Thursday while addressing a press conference in Owerri, the state capital.

He disclosed that 14 political parties would vie for the 27 local government chairmanship positions and 645 councillorship positions in the polls scheduled for Saturday, August 25.

Mr Ebebuchi added that the electoral body has trained no fewer than 8,000 ad-hoc staff for the elections.

He said that the commission was ready and fully equipped to conduct the local government elections in the interest of democracy.

The ISIEC Chairman pledged that the commission would be neutral in its conduct and ensure a level playing ground for all aspirants and political parties participating in the elections.

He explained that in a bid to ensure a hitch-free exercise in the state, there would be a restriction of movement between 8 am and 4 pm.

Ebebuchi urged the people of the state to go to the nearest polling units in their areas to exercise their civic responsibilities.

He also asked them to elect the aspirants they believe would represent them efficiently at the grassroots.
