The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Adams Oshiomhole, believes the party will conduct free and fair primary elections for aspirants contesting in the 2019 general elections.
Mr Oshiomhole said this at the end of the APC Caucus meeting which held on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
“I think everybody has confidence that we will do very credible primaries to ensure that those who fly the flag of the party have the mandate of their various constituencies.
“There are two basic documents that we need to respect – the Electoral Act and the Constitution of the APC, and all that we need to do are sufficiently provided for in the Constitution,” he told journalists.
The party chairman revealed that the meeting discussed how they would ensure full compliance with the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He added that they deliberated on measures aimed at observing the principles of internal democracy, participation, as well as ensuring that party members get the justice they deserve.
“By Thursday, we will go to NEC where the formal decisions will be rectified and once they are rectified, they will be made public. They are not being kept because every member of the party and, indeed, every Nigerian is entitled to know how we agreed about the exercise,” Oshiomhole stressed.
The APC leaders met two days ahead of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled to take place in the Federal Capital Territory.
Those in attendance include President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.
Others who attended are APC stalwart, Bola Tinubu, the immediate national chairman of the party, Mr John Oyegun, as well as serving and former governors and ministers, and members of the National Assembly.
