Retired Lieutenant General Jeremiah Useni has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Plateau State.

The 75-year-old candidate defeated twelve other contestants to clinch the slot. He got 1,018 votes as against 340 scored by Johnbull Shekarau his closest rival.

Useni is currently serving as a Senator representing Plateau South senatorial zone.

He was once a Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Minister of Transport. He was also a close ally of the former military head of state, Sani Abacha.

He was the military governor of the old Bendel State, now made up of Edo and Delta States, between 1984 and 1985.

Useni will face incumbent Governor Simon Lalong of the APC who also won the governorship primaries organised by his party, unopposed on Sunday.
