The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has raised concerns over an alleged intimidation of the judiciary, a situation which he says must come to an end.

He said this on Saturday when a group of lawyers under the aegis of class 84 of the Nigerian Law School, visited him at the Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

He said, “The judiciary has been so much intimidated. It is unfortunate that the Nigerian Bar Association gave out themselves when they saw the intimidation of the judiciary, instead of them to rise and to say look, we can’t accept this. Today, it is difficult for any judge to sit that and write a judgement and say I want to write a judgement, it doesn’t matter what will be. (Because of) fear and intimidation.

“Then the security will come and tell you we saw one million Naira in your account come and explain and the judge will say, instead of this embarrassment, let me do what they want me to do”.

Speaking further, Governor Wike lamented that the time had come for Nigerians to rise and speak up against the wrongs that go on in the nation.

He also expressed fears that with the current situation of things, the 2019 elections may not hold.

The governor said, “With the way it is now, I don’t know whether there will be elections in 2019”.

He, therefore, advised that as the 2019 elections draw nearer, people shouldn’t hold gatherings just for the sake of it but rather make efforts to proffer solutions to the problems.
