Army, Air Force Kill Boko Haram Terrorists In Borno

The Nigerian Army says troops of 122 Batallion Gwoza on surveillance patrol intercepted suspected Boko Haram terrorists at Kasasewa checkpoint in Borno State.

A statement from the Army on Friday revealed that the incident occurred at about 10 pm on Thursday.

At the end of the encounter, the soldiers neutralised two insurgents while others were said to have fled with gunshot wounds.

Items recovered by the troops include three AK47 rifles, three magazines, six improvised 7.62mm (special) rounds, as well as clothing items, which were destroyed.

The Army said further exploitation of the general area was ongoing.

General Officer Commanding 7 Division, Brigadier General Bulama Biu, has commended the troops and urged them to remain vigilant at all times.

Elsewhere, the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE destroyed a Boko Haram logistics base along with some vehicles at Tumbun Sale in the northern part of the state.

The Air Force spokesman, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, disclosed in a statement that the operation was conducted on Tuesday.

According to him, the operation was conducted after Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions revealed the presence of some terrorist vehicles and several fighters camouflaged under a thick vegetation within the area.

“Accordingly, the ATF scrambled two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft, supported by an ISR platform, to attack the target area in multiple waves,” Daramola said in the statement issued Thursday.

He added, “The first wave of attacks recorded direct hits on a suspected BHT ammunition/fuel dump, sending it up in flames.

“Subsequent strikes also resulted in the destruction of some vehicles and neutralisation of several BHTs. The few surviving BHTs, that were seen fleeing the area, were mopped-up in follow-on attacks.”

The Air Commodore said the Air Force would work with surface forces to sustain the tempo of operations, with a view to destroying all remnants of the terrorists on the fringes of Lake Chad and other areas in Borno.
