Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) on Tuesday clashed with the police in Abuja.

Before the fight broke out, the Shiites were holding a procession to mark the 2018 Arbaeen, a Muslim religious observance that occurs 40 days after the day of Ashura – another religious observance mostly celebrated by the group.

They marched from the Aguiyi Ironsi Road in the Maitama area through Wuse II before police personnel prevented them from gaining access into the central business district.

The police dispersed the Shiite members with teargas, a move which was resisted by the protesters and subsequently led to the clash.

Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested many of the protesters for reportedly setting its patrol vehicle ablaze.

FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr Bala Ciroma, said the suspects would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations were completed.
