Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has condemned the police statement which described the recent attack on his residence as a case of burglary.

The lawmaker faulted the police while narrating his ordeal to his colleagues during Wednesday’s plenary at the Senate chamber in Abuja.

Explaining what happened, he said, “You will recall that yesterday (Tuesday), I said that before I came to the chambers that I have not had any call or contact with the police in spite of the several calls I made to them.

“But at about 1:30 in the afternoon, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) came to my house and he said it was the IG who sent him to come and see me. He came with the Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT. I showed them round and, of course, they were very sympathetic.”

Senator Ekweremadu, however, said he was shocked when he woke up to the news that the police said that what happened at his house was a ‘mere case of burglary.’

“I’m at a loss because as we speak, they have not taken a statement from my son who was hospitalised, they have not gone to the hospital to find out what happened to my son,” he said.

The lawmaker added that the security personnel attached to him have not given their statements and criticised the police for concluding that the incident was a burglary case.

He alleged that police were quick to dismiss what happened because they were unable to understand the CCTV footage operated by a DSS personnel in his house.

“Unfortunately to them later yesterday (Tuesday) evening, a technician came and was able to produce the CCTV footage of everything that happened, including how the people gained entrance into my house and how they found their way to my room; the fight that ensued between them, myself, my wife, and my son, and all the efforts we made to save our lives,” said Ekweremadu.

“I am happy that we have that in our custody, which the police are not aware of and I am sure that Nigerians will be shocked at what transpired.”

Ekweremadu then asked the police to withdraw the statement of burglary, stressing that he would be forced to release the said footage to the media if they fail to do so.

He said he had not raised the alarm to attract sympathy but for security agencies to understand what happened and use it as a measure to ensure the safety of Nigerians and their property.

The lawmaker also accused the police of trying to cover up the matter rather than doing a thorough investigation into the incident, describing the action as unfortunate.
