The Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, has refuted online debt reports which indicated that the state is owing N70 billion.

Governor Al-Makura faulted the claims while speaking at the inauguration of the state transition committee on Wednesday at the Government House in Lafia, the state capital.

“One issue I will like to talk about is the issue that is now awash in the social media about debt here and there. I think we should disregard that as not something to rely upon,” he said.

The governor added, “Those of you that are here know what efforts we have done in Nasarawa State to ensure the comfort of our people but very soon, by the time the committee of transition is done with its job, everything will be very clear to all the people in Nasarawa state.”

He countered the allegations, stressing that he has rather cleared inherited debt of about N40 billion between 2011-2016.

Governor Al-Makura insisted that his government has no debt to settle as they worked hard to deliver the dividend of democracy to the people.

He said, “Don’t forget that from coming in in 2011 to the end of 2016, my administration has been able to pay over N40 billion debts hanging on the neck of Nasarawa State.

“As I speak with you, I am not aware of any debt hanging on our neck by any financial institution that is beyond N500 million or thereabout.”
