The United States on Monday voiced “great concern” about Hong Kong’s plan to allow extraditions to the Chinese mainland after record crowds rallied in the semi-autonomous financial hub.

State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said the demonstration “clearly shows the public’s opposition” to the proposal, which she said jeopardized Hong Kong’s special status granted when Britain handed over control in 1997.
