The former Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Fatai Owoseni, has called on the Government for more funding for the Nigeria Police in order to address the numerous security challenges in the country.

He made the call during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, on Monday.

“The police have become an indispensable organ of government in every civilised community. They are powerful elements of the community; they are the powerful element of the strength and weakness of any nation.

“Indeed, as law enforcement and correction agencies and when you have such an important constitution, yet it remains the least catered for, you would have these (security challenges),” he stated.

Owoseni also called on the private sector to partner with the state government in contributing to Security Trust Funds.

He believes that once this is achieved, security challenges will be reduced in different states of the federation.

Speaking on the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), the former Commissioner noted that some bad eggs in the system created a wrong impression of the unit.

“A committee was set up that was talking about SARS. SARS is just a unit of the police. And by the way, there wasn’t any problem with SARS. It’s just that we had someone who came and refused to follow the extant rules and regulations through which that unit should be run,” he said.
