Oyo State has recorded 56 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19), the government has confirmed.

The state governor, Seyi Makinde, made the confirmation on Thursday via a series of posts on his verified Twitter handle.

He explained that with the 56 new cases, the state now has a total of 661 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

“The COVID-19 confirmation tests for 56 suspected cases came back positive,” Governor Makinde stated in one of the tweets.

He added, “So, the total number of confirmed cases in Oyo State today is 661.”

The new cases were reported in 13 Local Government Areas of the state with Saki West LGA recording 14 – the highest figure.

Others include Oluyole – nine, Ibadan North – six, Akinyele – 10, Ibadan South-East – five, Ibadan South-West – four, Ibadan North-West- two, Atisbo – one, Saki East – one, Ido – one, Ona Ara – one, Ibarapa North – one, and Egbeda – one.

Governor Makinde, who doubles as the Chairman of the State COVID-19 Task Force, revealed in another tweet that the state has recorded one more death from coronavirus.

The number of deaths recorded from coronavirus in Oyo has risen to nine, the governor said.

He, therefore, urged residents with strange fever, sudden loss of taste or smell, and other COVID-19 symptoms to promptly report to the nearest community-based testing centre in their community.
