The grilling of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has entered its third day.

The EFCC boss had first appeared before the special presidential panel reviewing the activities of the agency on Monday, after an invitation was sent to him.

According to the Department of State Services (DSS), contrary to claims that Magu had been arrested by the service, it had no connection to the case.

Magu’s Special Adviser on Media, Tony Amokeodo, also told Channels Television that his boss was not arrested but was only served the invitation to the panel, while on his way to the Force Headquarters, Abuja for a meeting.

According to Amokeodo, Magu was neither arrested nor forced to honour the invitation.

Meanwhile, in continuation of the probe which is said to have been on, weeks prior to his invitation, security operatives on Tuesday night stormed the home of the embattled EFCC boss in Karu, as well as his official residence in the Maitama area of Abuja.

It was gathered that the security officials left with some documents, but it is not confirmed if anything incriminating was found during the search.

Magu Probe: Presidency Says Nobody Is Above Scrutiny

Magu’s Probe Is A Question Mark On EFCC, Says Falana

The questioning of the EFCC boss comes after the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, had written to the President to demand his removal on several allegations of misconduct.

While some have described the developments as a power play by blocs in the corridors of power, a source in the presidency said the probe reinforces the commitment of the Buhari administration to transparency and accountability.

The source who pleaded anonymity also said it gives Magu the opportunity to clear himself of the weighty allegations against him.

The unsigned statement read: “The panel investigating allegations against Ag. EFCC Chairman had been sitting for some weeks now.

“In consonance with the principle of fairness and justice, it was needful that the Ag. Chairman be given the opportunity to respond to the allegations, which are weighty in nature.

“Under the Muhammadu Buhari administration, nobody is above scrutiny. Repeat: nobody.

“The investigation is to reinforce transparency and accountability, rather than to vitiate it.

“Accountability for our actions or inactions is an inalienable part of democracy.

“In such an elevated position as that of EFCC Chairman, the holder of the position must be above suspicion.

“There’s no prejudgement. Absolutely none. The Buhari administration can be counted on to uphold fairness and justice at all times,” the source said.
