Katsina Govt Trains Over 400 Selected Academic Staff Ahead Of School Reopening

Katsina usually referred to as Katsina State to distinguish it from the city of Katsina, is a state in North West zone of Nigeria.

The Katsina State Government has on Friday trained over 400 selected headmasters, headmistresses, and principals of various Public and Private primary and secondary schools operating in the 34 LGAs of the state.

The state Commissioner of Information Culture and Home Affairs and Chairman of the Publicity and Risk Management Committee on COVID-19, Abdulkarim Sirika disclosed this to Channels Television during a sensitization workshop centered on the NCDC Covid_19 Pandemic protocols for pre_ reopening of schools in the state.

Held in the state capital, the essence of the one-day workshop according to Sirika is to ensure that safety protocols are adhered to by both students and teachers.

“So the essence is to sensitise all stakeholders in both the public, private and Community schools, all those that are concerned are invited to be sensitised so that when schools reopen they will make sure that students observe the NCDC protocols. So as I am speaking to you, we have over 200 participants and this workshop is taking place in two different venues.

One is taking place at the Katsina Local Government Service Commission and the other one at the Umaru Musa’Yaradu’a University, Katsina. So they are scattered”. He disclosed.

He revealed that after the workshop, there is going to be a step-down training where those that are trained will extend the same training to their respective local communities.

In Katsina state, where cases of COVID-19 have reportedly been recorded in all the LGAs of the state, over 20,000 samples have so far been tested with 864 positive cases recorded and 24 deaths.

In the past weeks, the state has witnessed a decline in positive cases of the virus being reported in the state where the health team manages the few positive cases recorded so far on home care basis.

Channels Television recalled that on Tuesday, September 29th, 2020, the Katsina State Government directed all public and private primary and secondary schools in the state to reopen from October 5th, 2020.

The directive was coming as the state has on Tuesday recorded 859 confirmed cases of COVID-19, discharged 835 patients, and recorded 24 deaths with zero patient on admission.

This may not be unconnected with the successes recorded in the fight against the spread of Coronavirus cases in the state amidst government commitment to adjust the school reopening calendar of the 2019/2020 Academic Session.

Speaking in a press briefing held on Tuesday at the state ministry of education Katsina, the Commissioner of education, Professor Badamasi Charanchi the second term for the approved adjusted school reopening calendar will begin from Monday 5th October 2020 and close on 23rd October 2020, that’s 3 weeks.

Meanwhile, 3rd term will according to Professor Charanchi commence from Monday 26th October 2020 and close on Friday 5th February 2021, that’s 15 weeks.

During the resumption period, all schools are expected to be operating on shifting except when students are few with students must always be encouraged to wear facemasks, maintain social distancing and other safety protocols.

On September Thursday, 17th 2020, Katsina State Government directed tertiary institutions in the state not to reopen as it awaits complete guidelines from the relevant bodies.

The decision taken is in line with national and global protocols and part of measures to mitigate the negative effect and further spike of Coronavirus not only in the institutions but the state in general.

The Special Advisor to the state government on higher education, Dr. Bashir Ruwan_Godiya disclosed this during an exclusive interview with Channels Television.

He expressed the readiness of the state government to reopen tertiary institutions once it receives guidelines from the National University Commission (NUC) or the Federal Ministry of Education.

It’s worthy to state that the Covid 19 pandemic has continued to ravage the world at an alarming rate with the advent of the 2nd wave ( resurgence of new cases) in some parts of the world.

As at the last count, Nigeria had a total of 59,001 confirmed cases of Covid 19 with 1,112 deaths.

World over, 34,494,967 cases have been recorded with 1,027,777 deaths with the United States having over 7 million cases.
