The Katsina State House of Assembly has called on the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to withdraw officers attached to the Border Drill Operation in the state.

This comes after about eight persons were killed and others injured after a patrol vehicle of Customs rammed into a crowd in Katsina State.

The incident occurred on Monday morning in the Jibia Local Government Area of the state.

A member representing Jibia Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Mustapha Yusuf made the call while presenting a motion of urgent public importance before the floor of the House on Thursday.

Hon. Yusuf alleged that the officers are not conducting themselves in accordance with the set objectives as good officers.

The Speaker, Tasi’u Maigari Zango deliberated and unanimously adopted the motion and called on the state government to intervene on the matter.

Meanwhile, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hamed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd) has ordered an investigation into the incident.

He said the accident was a case of brake failure and will ensure that such reoccurrence will never happen again.

Even though human actions cannot always keep society accident-free, the CGC has already directed a holistic investigation into the incident with a view to preventing a reoccurrence of this unfortunate accident in the future.

“As a responsible Government Agency, we are mindful of the duty of care imposed upon us to ensure the safety of our citizens”, he said.

He condoled with the families of the victims and assured that those injured will be taken care of adequately.

“Nigeria Customs Service shares in the pains of losing these compatriots and extends heartfelt condolences to the immediate families of the deceased, Government, and the people of Katsina State.

The Service is doing all it takes to get the best treatment possible for the injured and will do what it can to ameliorate the pains of those who lost their loved ones”.
