Passengers in the commercial city of Kano were stranded on Monday morning following a strike action embarked on by tricycle riders in the state.

Most highways were deserted while residents walked long distances to work, school, and their different business places.

Commuters also lamented the hardship caused by the action of tricycle operators.

“I was stranded and didn’t know what to do, I just kept trekking,” one of the residents affected by the strike lamented.

Channels Television gathered that the riders are aggrieved because they are asked to pay N8,000 as the annual renewal of their operating permit.

The Director, Kano State Road Traffic Agency Bappa Angudi described the strike as baseless because a serene and safe environment is derived from revenue generation.

“The reason why there is peace in Kano is due to the efforts made by the government and security agents in the state. This entails spending a lot of money and revenue is required to take care of all these things.

“The law says they must pay their revenue and they don’t want to pay. They have once gone to court and the court ruled that they should obey the law and pay,” Angudi said.

Also in an interview with Channels Television, the Secretary of Tricycle Operators Association in Kano said most of the tricycle operators do not belong to the association and do not comply with regulations.

Meanwhile, Kano residents said they are hopeful that the strike will be called off as soon as possible so they can return to their normal lives.

Tricycle operators provide almost 99 per cent of Kano’s main means of transportation and its environs.
