NCDC Confirms 228 COVID-19 Cases In 13 States, FCT

Nigeria has confirmed 228 new cases of COVID-19 in various parts of the country, said the Federal Government agency responsible for the control of disease outbreaks.

Giving an update on the outbreak of the disease in a Facebook post on Monday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) disclosed that the new cases were reported in 13 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Of the cases, the FCT recorded the highest number of infections – 110 and was followed by Gombe and Lagos which reported 38 and 32 new cases respectively.

Others states with fresh infections on Sunday are Osun – 14, Taraba – 12, Imo – five, Kaduna – five, Rivers – four, Borno – two, Kano – two, Bauchi – one, Delta – one, Ekiti – one, and Ogun – one.

Latest data from the NCDC revealed that no new fatality was recorded, but the nation’s toll from the disease stands at 3,124.

Since the country reported its first case in late February 2020, Nigeria has confirmed a total of 252,187 infections out of which 226,408 infected people have been discharged.

The NCDC said it has collected and tested a total of 3,992,486 samples while 22,655 cases are still active in various states and the FCT.

The confirmation of the new cases comes barely a week after Nigeria received 3.2 million Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines donated by the United States.

On Tuesday last week, the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib, and his technical staff, among others took delivery of the vaccines presented by the U.S. Ambassador, Beth Leonard, at the National Strategic Warehouse in Abuja.

“These vaccines have over six months of validity before expiration and are being stored at the National Strategic Warehouse for distribution to thousands of COVID-19 vaccination sites nationwide,” the U.S. Mission in Nigeria had said in a statement.

“The latest shipment reflects the United States’ commitment to purchasing and donating 1.2 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses worldwide. To date, the United States has delivered more than 370 million vaccine doses to over 110 countries. This includes the over 24.7 million U.S-donated doses of COVID-19 vaccines to the Nigerian people.”
