A police officer who was on an illegal duty has allegedly killed two people at a birthday party in Gowon Estate in the Egbeda area of Alimosho, Lagos State.

The trigger-happy officer was said to have shot two persons while spraying the celebrant on Sunday.

An eyewitness told Channels Television that “The officer was happy and wanted to celebrate with a gun salute but mistakingly pointed the gun at the guest and fired, the shots hit two of them and they died while one was injured.

The source further confirmed that the policeman carried an AK 47 Rifle to the bar and the empty shell of the weapon was found when the police visited after the incident.

He adds that “the state police command is more interested in ascertaining how an off duty personnel got the rifle he used that night.” However, he could not confirm if the alleged policeman was drunk before the act.

Policemen attached to Gowon Estate Division stormed the scene after the bar’s owner, Sylvanus Chukwukezie made an emergency call for complaint and rescue arrested two of the guests.

Confirming the incident, The command police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin said the command is in touch with the killer cop and he has been told to immediately turn himself in.

SP Hundeyin added that the celebrant who reports say has gone into hiding since the incident on Sunday night has also been invited for questioning to shed more light on what transpired at the event.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police Abiodun Alabi, has ordered the immediate arrest and discrete investigation into the matter with disciplinary action and immediate prosecution of those found culpable.

Mr Hundeyin, however, appealed to operators of hotels, bars, and other public spaces where residents regularly converge to ensure close circuits cameras are put in place to assist in investigations in case of such incidences.
