38-year-old Danagogo Wenike-Briggs has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Rivers State.

Wenike-Briggs, who was the only aspirant in the party’s primary election, was elected on Saturday through a unanimous voice vote by the 130 delegates who participated in the exercise in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Speaking to Channels Television shortly after the election, Wenike-Briggs promised a hot contest in the 2023 governorship poll in the state, saying the YPP has all it takes to sack the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (YPP) from office.

The YPP candidate said despite his age, his party would challenge the so-called big political parties to secure victory at the polls.

This is even as he is leveraging on his family political profile, being the grandson of Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Trade and Commerce in the Yakubu Gowon’s administration to galvanise support from the elite.

Meanwhile, the party’s Chairman in the state, Omangima Harry, said their confidence is boosted by the provisions of the new Electoral Act and the desire of the youths to effect a change.

He stated this after the YPP candidate received his Certificate of Return in the state capital.
