The Federal Government says it will soon lift more COVID-19 restrictions to relieve Nigerians, especially travellers, of some stress.

This was disclosed by the National Coordinator/Technical Head, Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19, Dr Mukhtar Muhammad, on Channels Television Sunrise Daily programme on Tuesday.

He said even though the world is moving on away from COVID-19, it is only proper that relaxation of the restrictions are done gradually without rush to avoid mistakes.

“What we have been doing since April is a gradual relaxation of the restrictions. For example in April, we issued a guideline where we said the use of facemask is discretionally especially if you are in an outdoor place.

“Since that announcement I think many people have even dropped face mask all together. Many people interpreted that we have lifted all restrictions. I said no, we have not lifted all. You have to do it in measured ways.

“We have met and we are reviewing the situation and we are putting some timeline on it. We are going to lift a lot of the problems that people consider as restrictions,” Muhammad said.

The PSC member also said hospitalisation and mortality rate have gone down but the risk to contract COVID-19 is still there, hence the need not to be in a rush with the lifting of restrictions.

On complaints by international travellers at airports, Mukhtar said it is in the best interest of everyone to complete the health declaration form, adding that it is done to protect people and their families.
