Ex-Super Eagles star Mutiu Adepoju is ruing the Olympic Eagle’s failure to qualify for the 2024 football event of the competition.

Nigeria lost 2-0 on aggregate to Guinea in the qualification race for the U-23 AFCON which serves as a qualifier for the male football event of the Olympics.

This means Nigeria won’t be at the Olympic Games for the second time in a bounce, a development Adepoju, nicknamed “Headmaster”, described as disappointing.

“Well, I think it is very sad. Nobody is happy about that,” he told Channels Television in Lagos. “But I think this is the more reason we should take care of our league.”

‘Do Something’

According to him, the Nigerian league needs to be more competitive, and as such, efforts should be made to “do something” to address the challenges in the competition.

“We have to take care of our league and the clubs too. I will always say we have to be up and doing and be more professional because the U-23 is practically from the league,” he added.

“If we have the league running – it is not that our players are not good – but we are not able to beat teams that we used to beat before, I think we just need to do something.”
