President Muhammadu Buhari deserves breathing space after eight years as Nigeria’s leader, according to his media aide Garba Shehu.

The Senior Special Assistant, Media, and Publicity to the President stated this on Channels Television Sunrise Daily.

“There is never a country on earth that has solved all problems one hundred percent,” he said on Thursday.

“But President Muhammadu Buhari has done his best for the country. He deserves to go home and rest, and Nigerians would cherish him afterward.”

The presidential aide claimed that Buhari has been a victim of a tyranny of expectations from Nigerians.

But he said that with Buhari’s social investments, Nigerians have something to remember his principal after eight years.

“Obasanjo would be remembered for telecoms, and Shagari would be remembered for bringing people together. Nigerians would remember Buhari for raising power availability to 20,000 megawatts, for doing the Second Niger Bridge, for paying pensions, and for doing bridges,” Mr Garba added.

“Never have we seen this in size and performance on the entire continent. Four million children taking off the street (out-of-school children) and put back in school.”

He, however, lamented Nigerians’ short span of affection and commendation for the government in power, predicting that it would be the same with the next administration.

“The honeymoon for the Nigerian government is a very short one. They welcome you, and they love you from the beginning but shortly afterward, this love turns into hate…

“It is after they leave office that we begin to shower praises and love them. So, we are content with that, that is why we are not bothered. We go and sleep very soundly, they abuse all of us. The crown is on our heads today. It would go from President Buhari to the president-elect,” he said.
