Authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have apologised over a viral video showing a lecturer assaulting a student of the institution.
The viral video triggered outrage from Nigerians since it surfaced on social media earlier in the week.
But in a Thursday statement, the institution said the incident does not reflect the school’s character.
“Displeased with what he saw in the video, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, has waded into the matter with a view to setting up a committee to unravel the circumstances surrounding the whole scenario,” the school said.
OUA spokesperson Abiodun Olarewaju quoted the VC as saying “what happened in the viral video is not in our character. We are a decent and diligent set of people who will not tolerate any form of abuse or maltreatment from anyone.
“We, therefore, apologise to the people, especially our alumni, whose sensibilities might have been assaulted by that shenanigan,” the statement read further.
The school thus appealed to students to go about their activities, assuring “stakeholders that justice will be served accordingly and appropriately” over the matter.
