Spotify 2023 Wrapped: Asake Is Most Streamed Artiste In Nigeria

Ayra Starr, another Grammy nominee, retained her position as the most streamed female artist in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda from the previous year.

As the year draws to a close, Spotify announced that Asake, also known as Ahmed Ololade, was the most streamed musician in Nigeria in 2023.

The singer, nominated at the 66th Grammys early next year, also claimed the No. 1 position in other West African countries such as Ghana and Togo.

In this year’s Spotify Wrapped, three of Asake’s hits – “Lonely At The Top,” “2: 30,” and “Amapaino” – were among the top ten most streamed tracks.

Ayra Starr, another Grammy nominee, retained her position as the most streamed female artist in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda from the previous year.

‘Calm Down’ star Rema rounded off the year as the most globally exported African artist. This is largely due to the success of the Selena Gomez remix of the song, which became the first African-led single to reach a billion streams on Spotify this year. The song is also the first by a Nigerian Afrobeats artist to feature in the top 10 chart of most streamed recordings globally on Spotify.

Spotify has announced Rema and Asake as global ambassadors of Afrobeats. Rema holds the title of the most globally exported artist, while Asake captivated audiences across Nigeria, Ghana, and Togo, earning him the coveted title of the most-streamed artist in each country.

Interestingly, Mohbad ranked among the top 20 most streamed artists in Nigeria, owing to increased interest in his music following his untimely death. Between September 13th and September 25th, his track ‘Ask About Me’ was the most streamed track every day.

According to Spotify, this year’s Wrapped showcases the remarkable diversity of music and the passionate listening habits of Nigerian music enthusiasts.

“Nigeria is a hotbed of musical talent, and we’re incredibly proud to showcase the diversity and passion of Nigerian music lovers through Wrapped,” said Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music, Sub-Saharan Africa.

He said that this year’s Wrapped is a testament to the power of music to connect people and bring them closer to the culture and traditions of Nigeria.

Even though Spotify Wrapped is primarily a massive data analysis strategy, the 2023 wrap displayed more than rankings and numbers.

It demonstrates that music lovers in Nigeria are tuned in on Fridays, with 3 p.m. being the most popular time to listen to their favourite tunes.

Furthermore, the wrap reveals that Rema topped the list of most searched queries, while Burna Boy topped the list of most searched and viral artistes.

Spotify also brought each user their unique individual wrap containing their most played songs, favourite artistes and genres from local and international music.
