Army Court-Martials 17 Soldiers Over Alleged Murder, Weapon Sales, Others

 

The Three Division of the Nigerian Army has inaugurated a general court marshall to prosecute erring personnel for various offences and unprofessional conduct towards upholding the principles of discipline within the military profession.

Convening the general court marshall at the Rhino Officers Mess, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, the General Officer commanding Three Division and Commander Operation Safe Haven Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar stated that the court marshall is for the trial of officers and soldiers who have been indicted for their involvement in various misconduct.

According to the lead prosecution and acting Deputy Director of Legal Services of the Division Major Mansur Mairuwa, one officer and sixteen soldiers are to face trial for offences related to murder, arms dealing, and other serious charges.

“The significance of this court marshall is to enforce discipline, professionalism, and regimentation in the execution of military duties. This action underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of conduct and accountability among its personnel in compliance with international best practices and the rule of law,” he said.

President of the general court marshall Brigadier General Liafis Bello highlighted that convening a court at the appropriate time underscored the essential for ensuring compliance with the military justice system which is guided by the principles of natural justice, equity, and fairness.

The president of the Three Division General Court Marshall, judge advocate, and other court officials were inaugurated and sworn in with the representatives of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) in attendance.
